Epidemic of Drug addiction

Unfortunately, the epidemic of drug addiction is on the rise and it is not slowing down. Parents, spouses, siblings, and family member alike are trying to find the best addiction rehab. Drug addiction rehabare quickly becoming a multimillion dollar business. With that said, many unqualified and dishonest individuals are looking to make a profit off the suffering addict and their family. A quick search for best addiction center will quickly bring up countless advertisements promising to deliver superb care. Loved ones and addicts themselves have to sift through the different facilities all while keeping a stockpile of questions on what to look for in a treatment center. What is the environment of the facility? Are there trained professionals with experience? Do they follow the guidelines for addiction treatment? These are just a few inquiries that determine the best fit for the addict.

Choosing the best addiction center may very well be a life or death situation. So how do you make a decision on what treatment center to send yourself or loved one to? Look for reviews on social media, usually a successful treatment center will have a fair amount of chatter going on amongst the past clients. Alumni events are an important part of recovery, they show the current clients that recovery is possible and attest to the treatment center itself. Speak with the staff and if possible visit the treatment center in person and ask for a tour. You have every right to inspect the conditions and gain an overview of what day to day operations look like. Ask for a schedule of the different programs, usually the best addiction centers will take a holistic and whole body approach to start the recovery process. Make sure those programs attend outside AA/NA meetings, it is one of the most important aspects of recovery. The addict should begin to be introduced to the meetings at an early stage in their recovery. It is what will set the foundation for their progress once they leave the confines of the rehab. Another pertinent stand for choosing the best in addiction rehabs is to inspect the qualifications of the clinicians. Depending on the addicts need, they should have at the very least have a counselor or therapist who can properly and effectively work through trauma with your loved one. While searching for the best addiction center is most often a hastily process, taking the time to weigh the pros and cons of every treatment is an informed decision that you or your loved one should make. The journey to recovery is never easy and never guaranteed, choosing the best addiction rehab for the addict will teach them the methods to thrive within the sober community.

Coming to Terms with Abstinence

Coming to terms with the concept of “never again” can be quite overwhelming for the dedicated alcoholic or drug addict. Imagining a life without drugs and alcohol seems near impossible – and certainly unsatisfactory. I mean, okay, so drinking and drugging has gotten a little out of hand over the course of the past several years… but this doesn’t mean you have to stop forever, right? That seems a little dramatic. You’ll dry out for a few months, get your life back on track, then manage your drinking and drug use without letting it get out of control again. You’ve certainly learned your lesson, after all. If you do decide to begin what has the potential to be a beautiful and unimaginably fulfilling journey – the journey of addiction recovery – you will soon find that ‘managing’ your drinking and drug use is altogether out of the question. In order to live a life of meaning and absolute freedom, you will need to give up the drink and the drug entirely. How do you go about doing this?
Most alcoholics and addicts continuously turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of coping with deep-seated emotional issues that have never been adequately addressed. The point of drug rehab (or at least one of its biggest priorities by far), is to therapeutically treat individuals who are suffering from unaddressed and underlying issues, such as emotional trauma and undiagnosed psychological disorders. Once a client has been successfully treated and learns to cope with uncomfortable emotions in a healthy and efficient way, he or she is far more likely to maintain sobriety. For this reason, amongst many others, finding a reputable drug rehab is essential. Another role that any good drug rehab will serve is introducing clients to the 12-step method of addiction recovery. The 12-step program will further help an addict accept the concept of ‘never again’ – and here’s how.

Accepting the Notion of ‘Never Again’

There is an age-old adage in Alcoholics Anonymous, and it goes “one day at a time”. This saying is perhaps the most tried and true of all coveted clichés, and for good reason. Imagining a life without chemical assistance is typically quite overwhelming during the early stages of recovery. Breaking the overwhelming stretch of life into smaller segments (manageable and realistic days) will help make the beginning of the journey significantly easier. Find a drug rehab that both treats all underlying causes of addiction and works to instill the basics of a 12-step program of recovery, and you will be well on your way to managing your intake of mood and mind-altering chemicals one day at a time.

5 Little Habits That Will Bolster Your Recovery

Addiction recovery is a complex and multi-faceted process – one that can be drastically improved with a little hard work and effort in the ‘habitual’ realm of your life. Replacing bad habits with good ones will help to improve the quality of your sobriety, while making you an all-around better and more well-rounded individual. Here are five examples of specific behavioral habits that have the ability to drastically improve your recovery.

1. Getting enough sleep.

You wouldn’t leave the house if your iPhone was at a 5% charge, would you? Think of your brain in the same terms – if you don’t get a good night’s sleep, you will not function properly throughout the day, and you will put yourself at greater risk of agitation and exhaustion – both major relapse triggers. Perhaps you have heard the acronym HALT in relation to addiction recovery. This stands for four common triggers – hungry, angry, lonely, and tired. Not only will getting enough sleep help you to avoid relapse, but it will improve your ability to reap as much happiness and fulfillment as possible from your newfound life of sobriety. Sweet dreams!

2. Paying attention to what you eat.

Many of the best drug rehabs offer nutritional courses to their clients. This is because the food that we eat and the nutrients that we are regularly putting into our bodies play restorative roles, helping our physical bodies return to a state of healthy functioning as quickly as possible. Additionally, adequate nutrition will help us feel good – we will have more energy, we will think more clearly, and we will be able to get the absolute most out of our lives. Get into the habit of eating right!

3. Volunteer/service work.

Helping others is a surefire way to take the focus off of ourselves and our own issues while helping to rebuild self-esteem. There are many ways in which we can do service work in regards to the 12-step fellowship of our choosing. For instance, we can chair a meeting, offer to make the coffee or bring cookies, or pick up cigarette butts after or before the meeting. This will keep us accountable while working to bolster our self-esteem. We can also volunteer outside of meetings, at homeless shelters, for non-profit organizations, or at the local food bank. When it comes to helping others, opportunities are essentially endless.

4. Sticking with the winners.

Make it a habit to spend the majority of your time with sober men and women who value their sobriety, and are ‘doing the right thing’ in terms of working a program and staying on track. Seek out the individuals who are taking their sobriety seriously – who have completed drug rehab and are making meetings on a regular basis, who are working closely alongside a sponsor and staying active with service work and other extracurricular activities. You are the company you keep, after all!

5. Keeping your personal space clean.

Clean room, clean life! If you make an effort to keep your personal space clean and livable, you will feel more at ease mentally, studies show. Keeping things organized will also serve as a constant reminder of how far you’ve personally come. Stay on the right track and you will find that keeping things tidy becomes all but second nature.

What is Drug Addiction?

Addiction is a chronic disease of the mind, body, and spirit, characterized by compulsive drug abuse despite the steady accumulation of negative (and often devastating) personal consequences. Those who suffer from severe drug addiction lose all ability to control their use somewhere along the line. While the initial decision to pick up a drink or a drug is just that – a decision – the psychological and physical alterations caused by repeated use eventually make using drugs more a matter of necessity than choice. Those who suffer from addiction will typically exhibit most of the following symptoms:

In inability to control use – a lack of control over the amount taken or the ability to control cravings. Once an addict begins to obsess about using, the desire to satiate that craving overwhelms everything else in a short period of time.

A preoccupation with obtaining and using drugs. All other personal obligations and previously enjoyed activities will inevitably fall by the wayside.

A building up of tolerance – a greater amount of the drug will need to be consumed in order for the substance to produce the desired effects in the user.

Withdrawal symptoms upon abrupt cessation of use. The user will experience physical and psychological symptoms of withdrawal if his or her substance of choice becomes unavailable, and use is stopped abruptly.

Is Addiction a Disease?

Even in light of dramatically increased rates of heroin-related overdose death, those who lack personal experience with addiction may succumb to the belief that it is not a disease at all – but rather, a matter of weak willpower or a blatant disregard of personal wellbeing. Those who have never battled addiction themselves may believe that a moral deficit leads addicts to act the way they do – stealing and lying and taking advantage of their loved ones. They may form resentments against the addicts in their lives, misunderstanding their affliction and confusing lack of control for ill motive. The truth of the matter is, addiction is a highly complex and multifaceted disease, and putting down the drink or the drug for any extended period of time takes far more than strong moral resolve and a bit of willpower. Repeated and regular drug abuse will lead to visible neurological changes – this means that the actual construction of pathways within the brain will be altered, leading to uncontrollable, compulsive seeking and using behavior. Because of this, quitting is exceedingly difficult to do, even if the addict concerned has come to the conclusion that he or she is absolutely ready to cease use entirely. Fortunately, addiction is entirely treatable, no matter how severe any particular case may appear.
